Free Backgammon Online — Play vs Computer

Play backgammon online free against the computer, with four levels from Easy to Expert. Pick a single game, or a match to 3, 5 or 7 points with the doubling cube, as in a real match. Undo takes back a move within your turn and Hint shows a suggested move. It runs in your browser on desktop, tablet or phone, with no signup and no download.

How to Play Backgammon

  • You play the light checkers. They travel from the top right of the board, along the top, down the left side and into your home board at the bottom right.
  • Roll two dice. Each die moves one checker that many points: two different checkers, or the same checker twice. Doubles are played four times. You must use both dice when you can.
  • A point with two or more of the computer's checkers is blocked. A lone checker (a blot) can be hit: land on it and it goes to the bar.
  • A checker on the bar must re-enter in the opponent's home board before any other checker moves.
  • Once all 15 of your checkers are in your home board, you bear them off. The first to bear off all 15 wins the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play backgammon online for free?

Yes. This backgammon game is free to play in your browser against the computer, with no download, no signup and nothing to buy.

How strong is the computer?

There are four levels. Easy makes the most mistakes and suits beginners, each level up plays more accurately, and Expert is the strongest. You can change the level in the menu.

What is the doubling cube in backgammon?

It doubles the points a game is worth. Before rolling, either player may make the first double; after that only the player who owns the cube can. The other side takes and plays on, or drops and loses the game at its current value. Use the DOUBLE ×2 button. There is no doubling in a single game or the Crawford game, and the cube can be turned off in the menu.

What are a gammon and a backgammon?

A gammon is a win while the loser has not borne off a single checker; it scores 2 points. A backgammon is a gammon where the loser still has a checker on the bar or in the winner's home board; it scores 3. Both are multiplied by the cube.

Can I play backgammon on my phone?

Yes. On a phone held upright the board fits the screen width with longer points, so checkers are easy to tap or drag. Tablets and desktops get the wide board.

Does the game save my match?

Yes. The match in progress and your settings are stored in your browser on this device, so you can close the page and carry on later.
