Minesweeper — Classic Free Game

Minesweeper is the classic logic puzzle: open every safe square on the board without uncovering a hidden mine. Each number tells you how many mines touch that square, so reading the numbers carefully is enough to solve most boards. This is the classic version — grey tiles, red counters, the smiley button — with the three standard levels, right in your browser. No download, no signup.

How to Play Minesweeper

  • Click or tap any square to start. The first click is always safe and opens up an area.
  • A number shows how many of the 8 surrounding squares hide a mine. A blank square has none, so its neighbours open automatically.
  • Right-click (long-press on a phone) to plant a flag where you are sure a mine is. The red counter on the left shows how many mines are still unflagged; the one on the right is the clock.
  • Click a number that already has all its flags placed to open every other square around it at once — known as chording.
  • Open every safe square to win. Uncover a mine and the round is over — click the smiley to start again.

Difficulty Levels

  • Beginner — 9×9 board with 10 mines (12% of the squares).
  • Intermediate — 16×16 board with 40 mines (16%).
  • Expert — 30×16 board with 99 mines (21%). On a phone held upright the Expert board is drawn 16 wide × 30 tall: the same board turned sideways so the squares stay big enough to tap.

Your best time for each level is saved on this device, so every clear is a chance to beat your own record.

Controls

  • Desktop: left-click to open, right-click to flag, click a number to chord, Space to flag or chord the square under the cursor, F2 or N for a new game.
  • Phone: tap to open, long-press to flag, tap a number to chord. Prefer tapping to flag? Switch the button under the board to Flag — long-press then opens instead.

Minesweeper Tips

  • Work from the edges of open areas. Numbers bordering the unopened squares carry the most information.
  • A 1 touching a single unopened square means that square is a mine — flag it, then use it to clear its neighbours.
  • The 1-2-1 pattern: along a straight edge, the mines sit under both 1s and the square under the 2 is safe.
  • The 1-1 pattern from a wall: when two 1s start at a wall, the third square along is safe.
  • When you must guess, guess early and away from high numbers — a guess costs less at the start of a board than at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the first click always safe?

Yes. The mines are placed after your first click, away from that square and its neighbours, so the opening move always clears an area.

Why does the Expert board look different on my phone?

A 30-column board is too wide to tap accurately on an upright phone, so it is shown 16 wide × 30 tall instead. It is the same 30×16 board with the same 99 mines.

Does the game save my best time?

Yes. Your fastest clear for Beginner, Intermediate and Expert is stored in your browser on this device.

Can I play on mobile?

Yes. The board resizes to your screen; tap to open, long-press to flag, or use the Open / Flag buttons for one-tap flagging.
